Copyright Basics
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to making the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) Terminology widely available at low cost. The Academy holds copyright on the Nutrition Care Process Terminology (formerly IDNT). Reprinting the NCP Terminology in any publication requires a reprint permission letter.
Reprint Permissions
- I would like to include content from the eNCPT in a book or journal article I am writing. Do I need to obtain written permission?
- Can I adapt content from the eNCPT for use in another publication?
- How do I obtain permission to reprint the Nutrition Care Process Model, which appears in the eNCPT and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association?

Citing eNCPT
- How do I cite content published on eNCPT?
Content on eNCPT can be cited the same way that you cite other web references. Citations for online sources should provide information that allows the source to be located and retrieved again. Refer to the appropriate standard (MLA, APA, etc.) for your discipline and context. Below, you can find examples of citations in the AMA style:
- Citing the entire eNCPT:

The U.S. Copyright Law, under Chapter One, Section 107, exempts limited use of copyrighted works, referred to as ”fair use” and such uses are allowable without a license. For more information on fair use and the copyright law, please visit www.copyright.gov.
Reprint Permissions
- I would like to include content from the eNCPT in a book or journal article I am writing. Do I need to obtain written permission?
Yes, please complete the Reprint Permission Request Form for the Nutrition Care Process.
- Can I adapt content from the eNCPT for use in another publication?
You must obtain permission to do so. Permission can be obtained by submitting the Reprint Permission Request Form for the Nutrition Care Process, along with a copy of the adapted content as it will appear in your publication. The adapted version of the content will be reviewed by member(s) of the NCPT Committee.
- How do I obtain permission to reprint the Nutrition Care Process Model, which appears in the eNCPT and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association?
Permission can be obtained by submitting the Reprint Permission Request Form.
- How do I obtain permission to reprint the NCP articles from the Journal?
Copyright permission for the Nutrition Care Process Model can be obtained directly from Elsevier’s Global Rights Department at [email protected]. Requests may also be completed online via the Elsevier homepage http://www.elsevier.com/permissions.
- Can I develop my own hard-copy paper form for charting purposes including the NCP terminology? Do I need to obtain written permission?
Yes, you can develop your own hard-copy form for charting. The Academy permits use of the NCP terminology in paper records.
